Honestly, in my opinion ( I could be wrong but this is just how I see it ) is that they wanted to use the desert to kind of symbolize loneliness. They were all beat up , just the 4 of them alone, kind of aimlessly doing things. I personally see this as how being on drugs felt for them. They were all somewhat alone..almost feeling stranded and lost... when all this shit was happening.
